Background: Since many years Foerster's ophthalmoscope (FO) is a popular instrument foremost for intraoperative funduscopy. Modifications regarding to new methods of illumination or other sources of energy were not realized. In our experiment we want to demonstrate a modified FO with LED as light source and a alkaline battery.
Methods: The lamp-frame of a native FO was changed to get the possibility to mount a LED. Furthermore an alkaline battery was installed. A pushbutton is used for dim-control.
Results: We could show, that FO can be operated with LED sources. Due to brightness of the light funduscopy can be done in not well shaded conditions. If there is no need for full brightness of the light, an electronical pushbutton can be used for dim-control.
Conclusion: The modified FO promises better handling with good brightness and low costs.
