Surgical methods in the hypopharynx cancer treatment

Introduction: The surgical treatment of the hypopharynx cancer was influenced by the diagnosis in advanced stages of patients which required different types of excision and pharynx reconstruction, followed in some cases by radiochimiotherapy.
Method: The authors performed a 10 years retrospective study (2000–2009) of surgical treatment applied in 156 patients with hypopharyngeal cancer, solved in the ENT department of “Sf.Spiridon” University Hospital, Iasi, Romania. In 108 cases the surgical treatment required radiochimiotherapy.
Results: We analyzed the results, incidents, complications and evolution after different types of partial or total pharyngectomy. In the cases where excision was necessary to be more the a half of pharynx, we had to close the defect by different surgical reconstruction methods.
Conclusions: The postoperative results, evolution and survival in the hypopharynx surgical therapy were influenced both by individual factors and the tumor stages.
The different reconstructive surgical methods used to close the pharynx defects appeared after tumor excision or fistula, allow to obtain a better prognosis and quality of life.
