Background: A new national point-of-care information website is being built in Belgium. The strength of this service is that it aims to include a national database of guidelines and other EBM-information, controlled by a all EBM-organisations in Belgium and linked to the electronic medical records from different companies.

Context: The Belgian EBM-information is currently scattered across various websites. Bringing together related information from various EBM-producers into a website that provides easy access to point-of-care information is a big challenge. Here we address the extraction of specific practice recommendations from web-based guideline documents and the integration with other Belgian EBM-information into a search path web interface for users.

Description of best practice: We started with the definition of a basic concept of search path in collaboration with a data-architect. The web-designer developed a prototype user interface and obtained the feedback from healthcare professionals. At the same time, a group of domain experts provided the clinical questions and specific practice recommendations from a guideline on oral anticoagulants. This information was entered into the prototype and linked to the related clinical questions from other Belgian EBM-producers. If certain clinical questions were not yet covered, then specific practice recommendations were extracted from an international guideline database. Finally an IT-specialist computerised the textual search path and a group of healthcare providers evaluated its presentation.

Lessons for guideline implementers: In this presentation we describe the opportunities and obstacles that we encountered in this test-case and illustrate how we integrated the EBM-information in a web-based search path.
