Text
Introduction: Hormonal levels during the menstrual cycle affect labyrinthine fluid homeostasis, which may lead to balance and hearing fluctuations.
Aim: To assess the changes in balance during menstrual cycle.
Materials and methods: We did a prospective study on 20 healthy women with regular menstrual cycle, not using oral contraceptives. The subjects were tested 4 times during their menstrual cycle – early follicular, late follicular, early luteal and late luteal phase. At each visit they filled in a questionnaire and underwent VNG and posturography.
Results: We have found objective changes in equilibrium parameters in the different phases of menstrual cycle.
Conclusion: Our study suggests that further investigations should be done to clarify the influence of sex steroid hormones on the inner ear.
