Background: The safety in drug utilisation / pharmacotherapy (Arzneimitteltherapiesicherheit – AMTS) is increasingly recognised as an integral part of any effort to patient safety. Within the German national strategy (Aktionsplan AMTS), a nation-wide survey was performed, to determine the knowledge and skills of medical / pharmaceutical last-year students in issues of AMTS.

Materials and Methods: The survey was web-based to approach students at all 36 faculties in Germany. The survey contained questions about essentials of pharmacology related to safe pharmacotherapy, concepts of patient safety and AMTS, and case medication reports (particularly in polypharmacy) to determine certain skills.

Results: More than 1,500 questionnaires were reported up to 15.09.2013. The data analysis will be reported to the congress, a prior analysis was already performed 12.06.2013.

Conclusion: In both disciplines, medicine and pharmacy, AMTS is not a clear defined target. Preliminary findings show that students in pharmacy are slightly more familiar with pharmaceutical aspects of the problem, whereas medical students are facing the practical challenges of (poly-) pharmacy. The knowledge and skills in both faculties should be increased.
